Eurasian Janus: Turkey's Security and Defense Dilemmas in the Aftermath of the Iraq War

The nature of Turkey's security & defense relations with the US, the European Union, & the North Atlantic Treaty Organization following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks is examined. An overview of Turkey's geo-strategic importance & military forces is presented. It is contended that Turkey's entrance into the European Union is primarily contingent upon its implementation of democratic & human rights reform & its willingness to consider the reunification of Cyprus. The Turkish government's motivations for resisting the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's calls for assisting in the attack against Iraq are then considered, eg, the possibility that a successful campaign in Iraq could prompt Turkish Kurds to seek reunification with Iraqi Kurds. Turkey's prospects for regaining the support of key European Union members & remaining a vital component of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization are also pondered. J. W. Parker
